Disney Princess is a media franchise owned by The Walt Disney Company, originally created by Disney
Consumer Products chairman Andy Mooney in the late 1990s and officially launched in 2000. The original eight princesses consisted of Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan. The franchise spotlights a line-up of fictional female heroines who have appeared in Disney animated feature films. The franchise currently includes twelve female protagonists from eleven different Walt Disney Animation Studios films and one Pixar film as each of whom is either royal by birth, royal by marriage, or considered a "princess" due to their significant portrayal of heroism in their film. Although the specific criteria for becoming a member of the franchise is vague for the most part, most often there are "unofficial" Disney Princesses who do not join the line-up either because marketing is not successful, or they are too young and so on. In the cases ofAnna and Elsa, they have spawned their own franchise because of how successful their movie was, despite being paired with the Disney Princesses from time to time.
Most recently, the line-up has expanded to include Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida and Moana after the successes of their respective films. Gamora, Shuri, Carol Danvers, Jan-Nin and Sade are all currently expected to join the lineup.
The Disney Princesses are featured in a wide variety of merchandise, appearing in anything from various sing-a-long movies, dolls and other toys to bed linens, clothing, cosplays and toiletries (such as hairbrushes and toothpaste). The Princesses are also prominently featured at the Disney theme parks. Since 2013, with the exception of those created after the Disney Renaissance, the Princesses have been showcased in their enhanced and modified/redesigned outfits (excluding Ariel and Mulan), instead of the actual garments that they wear in their respective movies.
Each official Disney Princess must meet the following requirements:
•The character must have a primary role in a Disney/Pixar film
•The character must be human, or human-like in the cases of Ariel, Gamora and formally Tinkerbell.
•The character should not have been introduced into a sequel.
•The character should be born royal, married royal, or has performed an act of heroism in cases of Mulan and Moana.
The character's film should be a box office success that is neither underwhelming nor overwhelming, and/or have cultural impact, like solely with the case of Aurora. This explains the absence of Eilonwy, Kida, Thumbelina, Anna and Elsa.
Along with it, the character must have massive appeal and recognition towards viewers and audiences alike.
In the 2016 film Moana, Maui states that princesses have animal sidekicks. This has been evidently shown to be a common characteristic among the official members. But it is unknown if it is considered an official Disney Princess rule.
Being a separate franchise also affects the status of a princess such as Tinkerbell when she enters the Disney Fairies franchise.
Facts pertaining to the original fairy tales, or comic books upon which the films are based are irrelevant to the versions appearing in the franchise.
The Princesses themselves, despite appearing in separate films, have distinct similarities. Most Princesses have the common ability to communicate with animals (even if the animals do not actually talk back). They are also known for their inner and outer beauty, as well as having beautiful singing voices (the exception to this is Merida, who only sings a song with her mother when she is little). Each Princess (excluding Merida) also has a romance that is resolved by the end of the film; the male counterparts are known as Disney Princes. The Princesses can also be grouped depending on what era their films debuted. The "original" three (Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora), are quiet, classy, graceful and romantic daydreamers; they play more of a "damsel in distress" role and suffer from the actions caused by others. They hold an inner strength through compassion, love, kindness and (particularly with Snow White) a strong sense of resilience. During the Disney Renaissance Era, which started with The Little Mermaid in 1989 and ended in 2000, the heroines in Disney feature films became more active than reactive and included Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas and Mulan. These women were strong-willed, adventurous, feisty, cunning and determined. They were less interested in finding love and more interested in finding adventure and freedom. The Renaissance Princesses also existed in worlds that were more self-aware of the changing roles of women. For example, in The Little Mermaid, the villainess Ursula assures Ariel that she won't need her voice on land as men prefer silent women; Belle, from Beauty and the Beast, is told by Gaston that "it's not right for a woman to read." And Mulan, who joins an army under the guise of a man, must listen to her peers extol masculine traits, while describing an ideal wife who is pretty, obedient and a good cook. The latest Princesses were created within the past decade and are more modern. Tiana from The Princess and the Frog is a young woman who doesn't rely on magic and knows that it takes hard work to reach one's goals; Rapunzel from Tangled, however, is more idealistic and isn't afraid to go after what she wants.
Whether or not Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy, should join the line-up has been a subject of debate among fans since all of her films were live action as opposed to being animated. However, she does meet the majority of requirements that would enable her to do so, such as having a primary role in a Disney film (Marvel Studios is owned by Disney), her first film being both a critical and commercial success and is regarded as a "national hero" like Mulan is.

However, there are also arguments that Crysta and Anastasia can't be Disney Princesses because their films were not made by Disney, of course Disney has bought 20th Century Fox and Disney now owns the rights to the films, they will likley be added if Disney officialy brand the Fox Animation studios films as their properties.
Why Some Disney Females are not a "Disney Princess"
Some female protagonists, even those that hold the "princess" title, may not be included in the official line-up for the following reasons:
Nala from The Lion King she is not an official Disney Princess because she is not human which means it would look awkward seeing animals with princesses
Sheriff Callie from Sheriff Callie's Wild West is not a Disney Princess because she is not a human being means it would still be awkward to see a calico cat be associated with the princess franchise.
Elionwy from The Black Cauldron, she is not an official Disney Princess because of both the commercial, and critical failure and lackluster of her film. It grossed 21.4 million.
Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire She is not officially a Disney Princess because her movie was a commercial failure despite it being successful in other countries, it only made 84 million in the United States and 102 million in other countries.
Miss Piggy, Janice and, Charlene Sinclair are not considered Disney Princesses since they're all live-action puppets.
20th Century Fox characters Lois Griifth, Marge, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson, and Meg Griffin are not considered to be "Disney Princesses" since they are all animated television characters, which does not meet the criteria. They are also from adult cartoons, and they do things that are not child-friendly.
Ice Age characters Ellie, Scrattee, Shelly, Mama Dino, Peaches, Granny Sloth, Shira, and Brooke are not considered to be "Disney Princesses" since they are all animal characters that were introduced in sequels, which do not meet criteria. Yes, Disney is now the parent owner of 20th Century Fox, but animal characters, whether they are live action, or animated, cannot join the line-up.
Natasha Romanov, Wanda Maximoff, Mantis and Valkyrie are not included in the line-up because they were all first introduced in Marvel movie sequels.
Pepper Potts, Peggy Carter, Sharon Carter, Frigga, Lady Sif, Jane Foster, Meredith Quill, Maria Hill, Hope Van Dyne, Janet Van Dyne, Grace Lang, The Ancient One, Nova Prime, Aleta Ogord, Okyoke, Dr.Wendy Lawson (also known as Mar-Vell), and Nakia are not included in the line-up because they were all introduced as either minor or secondary characters in their respective films.
Nebula, Hela, Goddess of Death, Proxima Midnight, Minn-Evra, and Ghost are not considered to be Disney Princesses, due to these women having to have all originally been first introduced as antagonists.
Characters from Disney comics such as Dickie Duck, Neptunia, Eurasia Toft and Agent Uma are not considered Disney Princesses since they're all foreign creations.
None of the female protagonists from a Disney television series (e.g. Kim Possible, Star Butterfly from Star vs. the Forces of Evil) are considered Disney Princesses because they do not affiliate with the Disney Princess Franchise.
Esmeralda was an official Disney Princess in 2004, she was removed because she was not selling as good like the others in the franchise like the others where so Disney crossed her off the list for that reason.
Jane Porter was originally considered as the newest Disney Princess in 1999, not long after the Disney Princess franchise started, she was ultimately removed likely because her dress color scheme was too similar to Belle's so she was removed for that reason so nobody would confuse her for Belle or confusing Belle for Jane Porter.
Giselle at that point was really close to being an official Disney Princess, however, the plans to include Giselle in the lineup have quickly dropped because they realized they had to pay royalties to Amy Adams likeness every time she is included in merchandise. Giselle is 32 years old, so she would of been the oldest of the princesses if she was part of the Disney Princess Franchise, she would of also been the first Disney Princess not to be from Walt Disney Animation Canon. However, she could return to being included in the lineup if Disney chooses to pay the royalties to Amy Adam's likeness, which apparently could happen because of the upcoming hybrid film, Disenchanted. Note, that she was a cartoon, then live action.
Tinkerbell has been removed from the franchise and replaced by Tiana from The Princess and The Frog because she is now the lead character of the Disney Fairies franchise.
Gamora, Shuri, and Carol Danvers will be able to join the line-up if Kevin Fiege, president and founder of Marvel Studios, approves the inclusion of both characters since their respective actresses have long since signed off on using their likeness in merchandise relating to their respective films. If included in the Disney Princess franchise, Gamora will be the oldest princess in the line up since she is 24 years old.
Anna and Elsa were both originally planned to be part of the lineup, until it was a huge success at the box office at 1.2 billion worldwide. Frozen ended up spawning it's own franchise because Elsa and Anna of they were added to the line-up regardless of their movie's success, Elsa and Anna would become so valuable and will take all sales away from the other 12 princesses by overshadowing them due to their popularity of their film and also by outnumbering sales of the princesses, so therefore they didn't need to join the lineup, however they are official affliations with the Disney Princesses and the Frozen franchise is considered one of the largest affliations with the Disney Princess franchise.
Anya and Crysta will both join the line-up, if Disney officially brands the Fox Animation studios/20th Century Fox Home Entertainment films as their properties like with Pixar, which was acquired in 2006. This would also apply to Leia, Gamora, Shuri, and Carol as well. For example, Princess Leia Organa is from Lucasfilm while Gamora, Shuri and Carol are all from Marvel Studios.
Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer will not join because she was introduced in a TV series and not a cartoon. Also, Buffy is aimed at an older audience.
Will Vandom and her friends Hay Lin, Taranee, Irma, Cornelia and Elyon from W.I.T.C.H. are not official because they were introduced in comics, never had a movie and they were not introduced speaking English (the comic series and TV show were originally in Italian, but got translated and dubbed).
Shanti from The Jungle Book is unofficial because she is too young and possibly because she wasn't introduced until near the end, and also because she never said anything, only sung.
Official Princesses
Each of the following 12 women has been certified as an "Official Disney Princess." Some were born into the title (e.g.
the four exceptions to these rules are Mulan, Gamora, Moana and Carol ; they are currently the only Official Disney Princesses who do not either come from royal bloodlines nor marry into royalty. Of the five, Moana and Carol are the only ones who have no love interest. Esmeralda and Jane Porter are also aren't royal, but they are no longer officially part of the Disney Princess franchise.
Born into Royalty: Snow White, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine (as a Sultan's daughter), Anastasia, Rapunzel, Merida, Anna, Elsa, and Shuri. Pocahontas is considered to be of royal heritage, as she is the daughter of a chief and therefore considered Native American royalty by the English.
Royal by Act/s of Heroism: Mulan, Moana, Crysta, Gamora, and Carol are royal by neither birth nor marriage. However, Mulan is still included in the line-up as she meets other requirements and has performed a significant act of heroism. Meanwhile, Moana and Gamora are expected to join the line-up for the same reason.
Regardless of any actual title(s) possessed, each official Disney Princess is properly addressed (within the franchise) as "Princess ________".
Snow White, titular character of the 1937 Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, is a character based on the German fairy tale "Schneewittchen." Snow White has the honor of being the first Princess in the first Disney animated feature, paving the way for all subsequent princesses. Adriana Caselotti provides the voice/singing voice for Snow White. Her true love is the Prince, who is able to wake her from her eternal sleep with true love's kiss. At 14, she is the youngest of the official Disney Princesses.
Cinderella is the main protagonist of her eponymous film and two sequels and is the second Disney Princess. She is based on the European fairy tale of the same name, of which several variations exist. Disney's is based off the French version. Ilene Woods provides the voice/singing voice for Cinderella (Original Disney version), Jennifer Hale provides the voice of Cinderella in the sequels, Tami Tappan provides Cinderella's singing voice in Cinderella III. Cinderella is the first Disney Princess to have siblings (albeit step-siblings) and is 19 years old. Cinderella is the first Disney Princess who is married into royalty (she marries Prince Charming).
Aurora is the titular protagonist of the film Sleeping Beauty, based on the classic fairy tale involving a beautiful princess, a sleeping enchantment, and a handsome prince. Aurora is sixteen years old. Mary Costa provides the voice/singing voice for Aurora. The original story is much darker than the Disney version It is Italian and involves her falling under a spell after getting a splinter. It also involves getting her pregnant via rape. Disney based theirs off the French version, which was based off the Italian version. Aurora has the distinction of being both the Princess with the least amount of screen time and singing more of her lines than speaking them. Aurora has the purest pedigree of any Disney Princess, being the first and only child of a king (King Stefan) who also presumably marries Prince Phillip, the firstborn son and heir of a king (King Hubert).
Ariel is the female protagonist of the films The Little Mermaid, The Little Mermaid II (although the title of main female protagonist is shared with Melody) and The Little Mermaid III, as well as The Little Mermaid Television Series, based off of the Danish fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson. Jodi Benson provides the both the speaking and singing voices of Ariel in all Disney animated appearances. Ariel is the first Disney Princess to have not been born human and is also the first Disney Princess confirmed to have children as she and Eric have a daughter, Melody, in the sequel. She is sixteen years old in the first film and is presumably in her late twenties in the sequel. Ariel's title of Princess comes from her father, King Triton, a title she shares with her six older sisters. She acquires the title of Princess Consort through her marriage to Prince Eric, though it is unclear whether he is a Prince Regnant (most likely), the son of a King, or both.
Belle is the fifth Disney princess and the main female protagonist of the film Beauty and the Beastand its two sequels. Paige O'Hara provides the voice/singing voice of Belle in all three films. Belle is the first Disney Princess to have an antagonist become her love interest. She is also the first person to have a confirmed country in the movie (France). Belle is seventeen years old and the second Disney Princess to be of common birth. When she marries Prince Adam (a Prince Regnant of his principality), she becomes a Princess Consort.
Jasmine is the main female protagonist of Aladdin, its two sequels, and the television series. Linda Larkin provides Jasmine's voice in all animated iterations of Aladdin, Lea Solanga provides the singing voice for Jasmine in the original Aladdin, Liz Callaway provides the singing voice for Jasmine in the sequels. Jasmine is the daughter (and only child) of the Sultan of Agrabah, the traditional title styled "Shahzadi Sultana" (Princess). When she marries Aladdin, a commoner (the son of the self-styled "King of Thieves" notwithstanding), he gains the title Prince Consort. Upon the death or abdication of her father in favor of Aladdin (as was stated to be the Sultan's wish), Aladdin would become the Sultan of Agrabah and Jasmine would acquire the title of Sultana. She is the first princess to not be the titular character in her film and is the first non-white and the first Middle Eastern/southwest Asian princess.
Pocahontas is the main protagonist of the film Pocahontas and its sequel, Pocahontas II, and is the first Disney Princess to have been based (loosely) on a real person, instead of a fairy tale. She is a Powhatan Native American, and she is the first Disney Princess to have two "princes" (John Smith and John Rolfe, though only the former is an official Disney Prince). Pocahontas is the second Princess (after Jasmine) to have her singing voice and speaking voice provided by two different voice actresses. Irene Bedard and Judy Kuhn provide the voice and singing voice of Pocahontas in both movies, respectively. Pocahontas was born as the only child of Chief Powhatan, thus giving her the title of Chieftain's Daughter. Though not royalty, she is accorded the respect of one (i.e. a princess) in the sequel and is officially regarded as a Disney Princess. Her eventual marriage to John Rolfe (a commoner) does not change her status or his.
Fa Mulan is the main protagonist in the Disney film Mulan and its sequel Mulan II. She is the first Disney Princess to be based on a legend and the second not to be based on a fairy tale (Pocahontas). Ming-Na Wen and Lea Salonga provide the voice and singing voice of Mulan in both films, respectively. Mulan is (to date) the only Disney Princess who does not hold the title of Princess in one form or another. However, she does earn the non-noble title of Imperial Consul. Her eventual marriage to General Li Shang (also non-noble) does not grant her any titles either. Mulan and Shang are the only non-royal Disney couple in the Disney Princess franchise.
Tiana is the main female protagonist in the film The Princess and the Frog. Tiana made history as the first African-American Disney Princess. Anika Noni Rose provides the voice/singing for Tiana. She is the third to be married into her title. Commoner-born, Tiana becomes Princess Consort upon her marriage to Prince Naveen, the eldest son and Heir Apparent of the King of Maldonia. She is the most modern of all princesses due to living in 1920s New Orleans and is the first American and first black princess.
Rapunzel is the main female protagonist in the film Tangled and the short film Tangled Ever After, based on the Brothers Grimm story Rapunzel. Like Aurora, she has golden hair, was born into her title, and was removed from her parent's custody as a baby, only to be reunited in her teens. Mandy Moore provides both the speaking and singing voices for Rapunzel. She is one of the stronger-willed Princesses and her preferred weapon is a frying pan. As the only child of the King Frederic and Queen Arianna of Corona, she eventually marries Eugene "Flynn Rider" Fitzherbert, giving him the title of Prince Consort. Upon the death or abdication of her father, Rapunzel will become Queen Regnant of Corona, while her husband will remain Prince Consort.
Merida is the main protagonist of the Disney/Pixar film Brave, making her the first Pixar Princess. She is the first princess since Ariel to have red hair: she has long, curly, red hair and blue eyes. Kelly MacDonald and Julie Fowlis provide the voice and singing voice for Merida. Merida is a Princess by blood; firstborn of King Fergus of DunBroch. Her lack of a romantic interest (and lack of any sequels) makes it unlikely that she will rise to rule the kingdom as a Regnant Queen, considering the views of gender equality in the era.
Moana is the main female protagonist of the Disney film of the same name. The daughter of Motunui's village chief, Moana was chosen by the Ocean to restore the Heart of Te Fiti and save her island from a life-killing darkness. Due to an ancient law upheld by her father, Chief Tui, Moana is forbidden from ever going beyond the reef. She eventually finds the courage to do so, with the help of a powerful demigod named Maui, and the guidance of her Gramma Tala. In restoring Te Fiti's lost heart, the world is freed of darkness, allowing Moana's people to voyage the seas as freely as they please.
The fourth Princess to come from the minds of John Musker and Ron Clements, Moana is one of the few Disney Princesses not to be based on a preexisting character. Rather, her story (save for Maui and his exploits) are almost wholly original. Furthermore, unlike her most recent predecessors, Moana was not inducted with a coronation event. Instead, she was slowly integrated into official Disney Princess merchandise such as books, social media posts and toylines following the release of her film, before being added to the franchise's official website as an official member in 2019. She is the first princess since Mulan, and the ninth princess overall to be officially inducted into the franchise without a coronation. However, she is the first princess to be lately inducted when the franchise was already in function. She is also the second princess, after Merida who doesn't have a love intrest and the third CGI Princess after (Rapunzel and Merida).
Sade is the main protagonist in Disney's upcoming live-action film of the same name. She has warrior powers which protect herself and her people. However, despite being live action she will likley join the Disney Princess lineup in the further future.
Gamora
Gamora is a character Disney had created for it's live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. Some fans believe that she might join the line up at some point
after the release of either Avengers: End Game or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 despite her film, Guardians of the Galaxy, and it's sequels all being live action. However, she is also, one of the main protagonist of an animated series of the same name on Disney XD. She's loosely based off a character of the same name from Marvel's series of comic books. In Disney canon, Gamora, the reformed assassin step-daughter of the Mad Titian Thanos, began seeking her redemption when she was first hired to steal an orb when she finds herself in the middle of a quest to save Xandar from a sinister Kree Accuser. This eventually lead to her becoming friends with and joining the other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Whether Gamora should or shouldn't join the line-up has been the subject of debate among fans, due to her films all being live action even though there might be a chance that she may. If included, Gamora would be the first Disney Princess from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as be based off a character from a Marvel Comic. Her film would also be the first Disney Princess film to be originally based off a Marvel comic since Disney is the parent owner of Marvel. She would also be the oldest princess in the franchise for at the start of her first film, Gamora is 24-years-old. In addition, the inclusion of Gamora would make her and Peter Quill the second non-royal Disney couple to be part of the line-up. She is portrayed by Zoe Saldana.
Shuri is the daughter of King T'Chaka and Queen Ramonda, and the sister of T'Challa. Shuri loves her brother deeply, and she helps him run Wakanda. She has genius-level intellect, being on the same intellectual level as Tony Stark, Hank Pym and Bruce Banner. Her vast scientific knowledge helps not only Wakanda as a whole but also T'Challa in his role as the superhero Black Panther. She also appears as a protagonist in the animated series Marvel's Avengers: Black Panther Quest. She is the first Disney princess to come from an African nation. She is also the second Disney Princess to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as be based off a character from the pages of a Marvel Comic.
Carol Danvers
Carol Danvers, who is also known as "Captain Marvel", is the protagonist of the
upcoming 2019 Marvel Studios film Captain Marvel, as well as Avengers: End Game. In Disney canon, Carol is an American air-force pilot who obtain cosmic powers as a result of her Kree-heritage. It is also believed that aside from replacing both Steve Rogers and Tony Stark as a leader of the Avengers team, she might be able to join the Disney Princess franchise along with Gamora and Shuri in the future if Kevin Feige, President and Founder of Marvel Studios, approves the inclusion. If that's the case, then, the character, played by Brie Larson, would become the third American-born Disney Princess after Pocahontas and Tiana.
Jan-Nin
Jan-Nin is the main protagonist of Dragon Empire. She's also considered to join the Disney Princess franchise along with Sade.
The New Latina Princess
It has been official confirmation about an Latina Disney Princess that will join the lineup in our future. But it the rumor is whether she could instead starr in her own movie instead of appearaing in a sequel or she possibly starrs in a spin-off film of Moana. The plot and everything else remains unknown, because since last month they've been into the works of this project.
Possible Princesses to Return

Disney has officially announced that they are in production with it's upcoming sequel to Enchanted, "Disenchanted." There's been many rumors that Giselle could join the lineup, if there true then Disney will choose to pay the royalties to Amy Adams in order to have her as an official Disney Princess.
Esmeralda
Disney also just recently confirmed an live action remake is in the works of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." It is unknown whether or not it will either appear in cinemas or just on the streaming serivce, but if it does appear in the cinemas, and if it becomes more successfull fiancally, then Esmeralda will likley return to the lineup, as she was removed previously in 2004 due to the DP sales were down in notch. Like Mulan, Gamora, Moana and Carol, she isn't royalty but peforms a significant act of heroism.
Princesses and "Princesses" Outside of the Lineup
This category includes characters who meet the qualifications for Disney Princess and/or have been included in Disney Princess merchandise, but are not included in the official lineup. These characters stand above those denominated as "Heroines" because heroines do not have any chance of actually joining the franchise.

Anna
Anna is the Norwegian heroine female protagonist of the 53rd Disney Animated Film "Frozen." She was originally planned along with Elsa to join the Disney Princess lineup, but until there box office success they were successful enough to spawn their own franchise, despite not actully being part of the lineup, they're both considered official among fans since Ralph Breaks the Internet.
Elsa
Elsa is the deutaragonist of Frozen. If they were officially part of the lineup, then Elsa would have been the first princess to become queen in her film and She Anna would also be the third and forth princesses after Snow White and Cinderella, to be orphans. Same said with Anna, they both are current stars of the Frozen franchise, again despite not being part of the Disney Princess lineup, their franchise strongly affiliates with the princesses.
Princess Elena
Princess Elena is the protagonist in her movie "Elena in the Secret of Avalor." She is also the third unofficial Disney Princess to have a coronation, after Elsa and Anna. The reason she doesn't qualify to be in the lineup because not only her movie wasn't in theaters, but also because she is from a television series.
Anastasia Romanov
Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanov (Romanova would be more accurate, as female names have an "a" added in Russia) is the protagonist of 1997 Don Bluth film, Anastasia. Due to Disney purchasing the rights to 20th Century Fox, she can technically be considered a Disney Princess, but Anastasia at this point is very unlikely that she'll be part of the lineup since her movie was made 20 years before the acquisition.

Disney heroines and actual princesses that are not part of the official line-up but are princesses/heroines in their respective films but officially have affiliations with the Disney Princesses. These characters have appeared in some official Disney Princess products or promotions. However, these characters may officially join the line-up in the future depending on public interest in them. Non-Disney Princesses
Due to Disney's massive influence in both the animation and comic book film industry as a whole, several non-Disney movies have featured female protagonists that are directly influenced by Disney Princesses. These are not always princesses per se, but fall under most of the same visual and characterization tropes, and as such as frequently mistaken for actual Disney characters. They are frequently referred to as "Non-Disney" Princesses in various outlets discussing animation.
Princess Irene from Budapest Films' The Princess and the Goblin was loosley based off the original fairytale in 1872. She is royal by birth. This Non-Disney Princess movie was considered to be one of it's worst animated failures in history. It grossed 2.150 million at the box office. She also was not indroduced speaking English until the dub came out (her original language was Hungarian).
Princess Odette from Richard Rich's The Swan Princess is an example of a classical princess in a 90's movie. Notably, as Disney owns the television rights for The Swan Princess and its sequels, she can technically be considered an actual Disney Princess. Royal by birth. The film was a flop at the box office. It grossed 9.7 million worldwide, including the U.S.
Kayley from Warner Brothers' Quest For Camelot was modeled directly after Belle, to the point that the movie character (otherwise loosely based on Lynette from the book The King's Damosel) has been accused of plagiarism. Not royal, though she displays acts of heroism. The film was also a critical and commercial failure at the box office. It grossed 38 million worldwide. Kayley is even considered to be a Disney rip off character since she has an identical resemblance to Belle.
While Universal Studios currently holds the film rights to the Pokemon series of games, which includes the upcoming Detective Pikachu, this does not appear to be the case with the famous, long-running animated series of the same name. Currently, Disney holds all television rights to Pokemon: The Series, which can technically make the show's female characters like Misty, May Maple, Dawn Berlitz, Iris, Serena, Bonnie, Lana, Mallow, and Lillie "Disney Princesses" since the majority of them have all appeared in animated Pokemon films. Although they can all be regarded as being "royal" by acts of heroism, they cannot join the line-up since they are all foreign creations, via, Nintendo.
Amalthea from Rankin Bass' The Last Unicorn is a fairly Disney-like character who has a song. If Disney bught the rights to Rankin Bass, she still probably wouldn't become a princess because she's a unicorn, she suffers from major depression problems and her movie had too much violence and she was naked at one point (when she became human).
Princess Zeila from Italy's The Singing Princess is also Middle Eastern and looks kind of like Jasmine. She is a child and originally spoke Italian, so she would not be official.
Malta from Nihon Herald Eiga's The Sea Prince and Fire Child looks similar to Ariel and Snow White. If Disney owned the company, she wouldn't be a princess because she is a fairy but not human (she has blue skin) and she is naked. She would also be unofficial due to originally speaking Japanese.
Chel from Dreamworks' The Road to El Dorado would be their second Hispanic princess if Disney owned the company. She would only be a princess by acts of heroism.
Daria from The Princess and the Pea would not be a princess, even if Disney owned her, because her movie was considered one of the worst cartoon movies ever. The background princesses Lillian, Leona, and Svenja wouldn't be official because they are only background characters.
Princesses Ella and Snow White from Berliner Film Company's Happily N'Ever After and Happily N'Ever After 2 would not be official, because they are parodies and they are from movies that got negative reviews. Snow White would also be confused for Disney's version. Also, they would not be official due to originally speaking German, not English.
Diana Prince and Mera from the DC Extended Universe, which was produced by Warner Brothers, would be able to join the official line-up since both Wonder Woman and Aquaman were both critical and commercial success at the box office. If Disney was DC's parent owner, Diana would join the line-up, due to being royal by birth while Mera would be a royal by acts of heroism.
Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup from the 1998 TV Series "The Powerpuff Girls" are the main protagonists, they are superheroes who they battle crime to save the city of Townsville. If Disney buys Cartoon Network, then they can technically be considered at Disney Princesses, but they still would not be able to qualify to be part of the royal court because they first originated from TV Show, despite them also having a theatrical movie which was released in 2002. Addition to this reasoning, they all are stated to be at least 6 years old so that means they are too young to be part of the Disney Princess franchise.
Aisling from the Irish animated film The Secret of Kells would be official if Disney bought out Cartoon Saloon, as she is a fairy.
Mila from the Ukrainian movie The Stolen Princess would not be official if Disney bought the company, because it never got released in English in the USA or Canada.
Camille from Tokyo Movie Shinsa's Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland would be unofficial due to her age being too young, being introduced in an anime and originally speaking Japanese.
Formerly Non-Disney
Disney has officially acquired the rights to all of 20th Century Fox's assets, the deal is expected to be finalized by January 1st, 2019.
Anastasia from Don Bluth's Anastasia is a notable example in that her movie was a box office success and is among the most frequently mistaken for a Disney character. She is royal by birth. However, she could join the lineup if Disney brand the Fox Animation Studios films as officially their properties.
Thumbelina, another Don Bluth creation, is modeled directly after Ariel and bears the same voice actress. Notably, test screenings have shown that audiences were more responsive to her when her movie had the Disney logo displayed. Royal by marriage. However, even if Thumbelina as a Disney property, she still can't be part of the official lineup due to it being a massive failure at the box office. Also, both Ariel and Thumbelina are from Denmark.
Crysta is from the 1992 Fox Animated film, "Ferngully the Last Rainforest." The movie grossed 33.4 million worldwide and it was considered a financial commercial success, like Anastasia.
Storm, who is also known as Orono Monroe, from Fox's X-Men series of films, would only be able to join the line-up if she was introduced in a Disney Marvel film as a lead character since she is considered to be "royal" by birth, marriage, and by acts of heroism. However, since it's rumored that she would appear in a Black Panther sequel, it's unlikely she would be able to join since sequels do not meet criteria. In the comics, she was married to Shuri's brother T'Challa and ruled Wakanda as it's queen.
Vanessa Carlysle, Negosonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, and Domino from Fox's Deadpool films would not be able to join the line-up, due to their films being rated R. In addition, both Vanessa and Negosonic were both first introduced as minor characters in the first Deadpool filmwhile Yukio and Domino first appeared in the sequel.
Junior television series Sofia the First. Sofia is a little girl who came into royalty when her mother marries the King of Enchancia. She is voiced by Ariel Winter. Though she is affiliated with Disney Princess franchise in her own show, she is in no way planned to be in the official line-up. This is due to her being from a television show and for the fact that she is too young.
Kidagakash "Kida" Nedakh is the deuteragonist of Atlantis: The Lost Empire and it's direct-to-video sequel, Milo's Return, is a princess and later a queen of Atlantis.Because of her film's box office failure, she hasn't been inducted into the official lineup. She would have been the eldest princess due to her age being 28 in human years and would have also been the first one to become a queen on-screen. She is also considered to be a "forgotten" character by the programmers of Epic Mickey, making a cameo appearance with her mask.
Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, and Andrina are Ariel's older sisters. They are the daughters of King Triton and Queen Athena, which makes them the princesses of Atlantica. Ariel's sisters appear only briefly in The Little Mermaidand its sequel, but they each have a more prominent role in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, as well as the TV series spin-off. They are not official Disney Princesses because they aren't major characters.
Eilonwy (Eye-lon-wee) was first introduced as the main female protagonist in The Black Cauldron. Based on Eilonwy from the novels "The Book of Three" and "The Black Cauldron" by Lloyd Alexander. The movie was Disney's first PG-rated movie. Despite being a princess in her own movie, she never became a part of the official Disney Princess franchise. The reasoning was due to the fact that the movie rating was PG and mainly due to the film's lack of success and copyright issues. Being twelve years old, she would have been the youngest Disney Princess had she been inducted into the franchise.
Giselle is the main protagonist of the movie Enchantedand a former princess of the Kingdom, Andalasia. Inspired by Disney's own princess franchise. She is both portrayed and voiced by Amy Adams. Though her film was a success and she was initially intended to join the line-up, plans were dropped quickly when the company had realized that they would have to pay royalties to Amy Adams for using her likeness. Additionally, it is her friend, Nancy, who ends up marrying the Prince. If she were to join, Giselle would have been the first official princess to star in a film that was not part of the Disney animation canon.
Megara (Meg) also more commonly referred to as Meg, is female tritagonist from Disney's Hercules. She is the love interest of Hercules and is voiced by Susan Egan. She was mainly inspired by the character of Megara from Greek mythology. During D23 Expo 2013, Meg was cited as a Disney Princess and Susan Egan was confirmed to be at the event, which led to rumors that she would be entered into the franchise. Unlike Esmerelda, Jane Porter and Tinker Bell who join the franchise and later removed, there hasn't been any evidence proved that she would join the lineup, she was more like a test princess, like Alice, however Disney didn't think she would fit for the franchise.
Melody is the main female protagonist in The Little Mermaid II. She is the daughter of Ariel and Eric and is the first Princess to have only appeared in a Disney sequel. She is not an official Disney Princess because her film was not theatrically released and also being introduced into a sequel.
Kiara is the daughter of Simba and Nala and also the main female protagonist in The Lion King II. She is not an official Disney Princess because she is a lion.
Kilala is the main protagonist of the manga series Kilala Princess. Most likely she is not a princess because she is a manga character and has never been in a film.
Kneesaa a Jari Kintaka
Kneesaa is a female Ewok who served as the princess of the Bright Tree Village, a daughter of Chief Chirpa and Ra-Lee, and also a younger sister to Asha. She later became the Chieftainess of the Bright Tree Village and Wicket Wystri Warrick's wife. Being a Star Wars character disqualifies her from the roster.
Princess Leiais a fictional character in the Star Wars universe. She is also a main protagonist in the original Star Wars trilogy and her position is less descriptive of her family status and more related to her being a figure of authority within the resistance against the Empire (and later she becomes part of the Republic), which disqualifies her from the roster.
Maid Marian is the main female protagonist in Robin Hood. She is the niece of King Richard, which means that she comes from a royal bloodline; however, she is not a princess because she is non-human and a fox.
Marianne
Marianne is the female protagonist of Lucasfilm's Strange Magic. Despite being a princess, she is not a Disney Princess because she is a fairy and because of the negative critical reception and box office faillure of the aforementioned movie.
Nala is the main female protagonist in The Lion King and a secondary female protagonist in The Lion King II and The Lion King 1 1/2. She is Simba's love interest, and if she were a princess, she would have been the second princess to have children. However, she is not an official Disney Princess because she is a lion.

Trivia
As of 2019, there are a total of twelve Princess films featuring nine Princesses (six by birth, three by marriage), one heroine and two that are daughters of a chief.
One of the unspoken rules of the franchise is that none of the Princesses ever make eye contact in any official merchandise, keeping their "mythologies" separate. The Disney Princesses were designed to have all the Princesses unaware of each other's presence.
Roy E. Disney was against the creation of the Disney Princess franchise, as he said, "Cinderella and Snow White could never be seen together because their stories take place in different times and places."
Going against the marketing strategy of the franchise, the Princesses, along with Vanellope, Anna, and Elsa, interact with each other for the first time in the Ralph Breaks the Internet. The rule violation is slimly avoided, however, given that the Princesses in the film are digital copies, thus not technically the real Princesses from their own universes. Despite this, the characteristics of the digital copies remain faithful to their original incarnations.
The reasoning for including Anna and Elsa in the film's variation of the line-up was due to the filmmakers recognizing the unofficial Princesses as princess characters that have the strongest association with the franchise, as well as sharing the connection of being from Walt Disney Animation with Vanellope.[17
Cinderella and Belle both wear ball gowns.
Aurora is the only princess to wear a typical princess gown.
Ariel is the only princess to be seen in her mermaid tail or wearing a bouffant gown as a human.
Pocahontas, Mulan, and Moana all wear their ethnic outfits.
Moana is also the only princess to wear a skirt as part of her outfit.
Jasmine and Mulan are the only ones to be scene wearing pants.
Tiana is the only princess to wear a wedding gown (without the veil). She is also the only princess to wear a wedding gown that is not white (the color is green with her case); although she does have a separate white wedding gown, which was used in her second wedding.
Rapunzel is the only princess to wear a peasant dress.
Merida is unique among the Disney Princesses for not only being from a Pixar film, but also isn't from real-life or literature, doesn't have any onscreen singing moment in her film and doesn't have a love interest. However, it should be noted that Young MacGuffin was intended to be Merida's Prince during production, before it was ultimately decided she would remain single. She is also the second Princess to display an actual accent, the first being Tiana, while all other princesses had inaccurate accents: Snow White, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Elsa and Anna (American accents) and Cinderella and Aurora (Fake British accents done by American voice actresses).
However, Mulan, Pocahontas and Moana don't have accents but their voice actresses have the correct nationalities (Chinese American, Native American and Polynesian respectively).
In the two remakes of the movies, the Princesses (Cinderella, Belle) have all been played by British actresses, thus giving Belle a British accent, meanwhile Cinderella still has an inaccurate accent. Belle originally had an American accent, and got a British one when Emma Watson played her in the remake. The only remake exception currently is Jasmine in the Aladdin remake coming out this week, where she will be played by a Middle Eastern woman.
Aurora, Rapunzel and Ariel's native countries are sometimes mistaken to be various other countries like England, Italy, Portugal and Georgia. Aurora is usually mistaken because she has a British accent while they are from France, Germany and Denmark.
Pocahontas is the first Disney Princess with two love interests with John Smith and John Rolfe. She is the only Disney Princess to not end up with her original prince however, and falls in love with John Rolfe (who she married in real life) in the sequel. Despite that, she's commonly marketed with John Smith.

Mulan and Tiana are the only Princesses to kill the main antagonist in their films. Mulan has actually killed more people than any other Walt Disney character, having buried an entire Hun army in a snow avalanche from which few escaped and survived.
Moana is the only princess to redeem her primary antagonist. (Before transforming as Te Ka, Te Fitiwas a source of goodness to the islands, until Maui stole her heart, which ultimately caused her to become a destructive entity.) She is also the only princess so far to encounter two antagonists in one film, and the only one to encounter both a male and female antagonist in one film.
All of the non-caucasian princesses have male villains, while Belle is the only 2D caucasian princess to have a male villain, all others are female (Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora and Ariel) while Rapunzel is the only CGI princess to have a female villain, all others are male (Merida and Moana).
Meanwhile, as mentioned above Moana is the only one to have both a male and a female villain in one movie.
None of the live-action princesses have female villains.
In Japan, only seven of the dozen Princesses are considered as official (Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, and Rapunzel) with the excluded Princesses rarely featured in local merchandise and promotional material.

Rapunzel was the first princess in the franchise to be computer-animated, rather than traditionally hand-drawn. However, she (as well as the other computer-animated Princesses, Merida and Moana) has a hand-drawn redesigns when appearing with the other Princesses in merchandise or pictures.
Several of the Disney Princesses are animated by the same person. Marc Davis animated Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora, Glen Keane animated Ariel, Pocahontas, and Rapunzel, and Mark Henn animated Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, and Tiana.
Tiana, Rapunzel, and Merida are the only Princesses to have a change of title in their film from their intended titles. Tiana's was originally The Frog Princess, Rapunzel's was simply called Rapunzel, and Merida's was The Bear and the Bow.
The first six Princesses have home releases in the form of "Disney Vault" limited time only editions.
There are eight Caucasian Princesses: Snow White and Rapunzel (German); Cinderella, Aurora, and Belle (French); Ariel (Danish); Merida (Scottish); and Carol (American). The eight non-Caucasian Disney Princesses are Jasmine (Arabian), Pocahontas (Native American), Mulan (Chinese), Tiana (African American), Moana (Polynesian), Gamora (Dominican), Shuri (South African) and Sade (Nigerian)
Clara from The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is the only Princess to have a nationality change (Russian to British), while all the other characters in the movie were changed to (Nutcracker is a black Brit, Sugar Plum Fairy is French, and were both Russian in the original ballet).
Tiana is the first Disney Princess to have a public coronation as all of the Princesses up to Mulan were already in the line-up when the franchise first launched in the early 2000s.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the only film in the franchise which won an honorary Oscar. Brave won an Oscar as Best Animated Feature Film of the Year. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas won two Oscars (Best Soundtrack, Best Original Song). Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Mulan, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Moana were just nominated for an award.
Merida and Mulan are the only Princesses to wield a real weapon in her merchandising form. Rapunzel's frying pan is also shown in merchandise but doesn't count as a 'real' weapon.
Cinderella, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, and Moana are shown as children in their original films. Ariel is shown as a child in her prequel movie, The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning.
Ariel is the only Disney Princess who isn't born a human, but she eventually becomes a human.
Ariel is also the first Disney Princess to have a child.
Out of the twelve Princesses in the line-up, only five are actually seen getting married on screen: Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine, Tiana, and Rapunzel. Jasmine got married in the sequel Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and Rapunzel got married in the short Tangled Ever After. Mulan almost gets married in the sequel Mulan IIto a prince of a neighboring kingdom for political reasons, but Mushu interferes and stops the marriage.
Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, and Jasmine are so far the only Princesses to have a live-action reimagining of their original films, though Aurora's film was reimagined to focus on Maleficent's point of view. Mulan and Ariel are confirmed to have a live-action remake of their respective movies in progress.
Aurora is the only true blonde Princess. Rapunzel's a blonde by way of the sun's magic, but is a natural brunette by genetics, while Cinderella is a strawberry-blonde.
Out of all twelve Princesses, Snow White and Cinderella are the only orphaned Princesses, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, and Pocahontas are the only ones who have only their fathers alive, and Tiana is the only one who has only her mother alive and the first to have only her father die.
Although most of the Princesses have been a damsel in distress, Ariel is the first Disney Princess to be in a heroine role — saving Eric from drowning.
Fa Mulan, Gamora Ben Titan-Quill and Moana Waikliki are the only three Disney Princess to have known last names.
Aurora and Mulan are the only Disney Princesses to go by aliases (Aurora as "Briar Rose" and Mulan as "Ping"). Although in Aurora's case, she thought Briar Rose was her real name until she was informed of her true identity.
Hair and Eye Colors of the Princesses
Snow White is the only cauacsian princess to have black hair and brown eyes.
Aurora is the only princess with an abnormal eye color while Rapunzel is the only one to be scene with an abnormal hair color.
Cinderella and Belle are the only ones to be depicted in different dress colors from their films to promotional items. Cinderella's was changed from silver to blue, while Belle's was changed from gold to yellow. Meanwhile, Cinderella also had her hair depicted with yellow blonde hair and while Belle is often depicted with brown eyes.
All of the blue-eyed princesses have red or reddish hair, however Elsa is the only one who has blonde hair instead of red or reddish hair, if you count her as a Disney Princess.
