"When You Wish Upon a Star" is the signature song written by Leigh Harline and Ned Washington for Walt Disney's 1940 adaptation of Pinocchio. The original version was first sung by Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards) and is heard over the opening credits and in the final scene of the film.

The song has been universally praised since its release, with its theme relating to wishes, dreams, and magic; all of which have become synonymous with the Disney brand. The song has since become the official anthem of The Walt Disney Company as a whole, having been used as the theme for the Walt Disney anthology series since the 1950s, and played alongside the Walt Disney Pictures logo before many films since the 1980s.

1940: Lyrics[]

Jiminy Cricket: When You Wish Upon a Star Makes
No Difference Who You Are
Anything Your Heart Desires
Will Come to You

If Your Heart Is in Your dream
No Request is Too Extreme
When You Wish Upon a Star
As Dreamers Do

Chorus: Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Jiminy Cricket: Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When You Wish Upon a Star
Your Dreams Come True
